Buckskin Leather Frequently Asked Questions

How are these hides tanned?

This leather is commercially tanned and dyed, making it soft, pliable, and easy to work with.

Will I receive the exact hide shown?

Yes. Every hide is individually photographed, so the hide you order is the exact hide you'll receive.

Can buckskin be sewn on a home sewing machine?

Yes. Most home sewing machines that are capable of sewing garment leather can sew buckskin. Read our article: Can You Sew Deer or Buckskin Leather on a Home Sewing Machine?

What projects is buckskin good for?

Buckskin is commonly used for clothing, bags, pouches, regalia, fringe, crafts, historical reproductions, and many other soft leather projects.

Is buckskin good for moccasins?

Generally no. Most of our buckskin is too lightweight for most styles of moccasins. We can help recommend a better leather if your project requires something heavier.

Are all buckskins the same?

No. Each one can vary in size, color, texture, and finish. Some have a smooth grain finish, while others have a suede finish. If you're not sure which buckskin is best for your project, feel free to reach out.

How do I know how much leather I need for my project?

There are too many variables to give a one-size-fits-all answer. The amount of leather you'll need depends on the project, pattern, finished size, and layout of the pattern pieces. The best option is to reach out to us directly, and we'll be glad to help sort through the available hides and find the right size, color, and leather for your project.
