Buffalo/Bison Leather

All hides are individually photographed. What you see is exactly what you'll receive unless otherwise stated.

Buffalo Leather

Buffalo (bison) leather is known for its natural grain, durability and wide range of weights and textures. Some hides are soft and supple enough for garments, while others are heavier and more substantial for bags, moccasins, footwear, cases and rugged leathercraft projects.

Our inventory includes full grain hides, suede and splits in a variety of colors, sizes and weights. Because the characteristics can vary considerably from one hide to another, this leather works across a broad range of projects depending on the weight and temper.

Garment Weight Buffalo Leather

Lighter weight buffalo hides can be surprisingly soft and pliable while still retaining the strength and durability the leather is known for. These hides can be a great choice for jackets, vests, pants, handbags and other projects where flexibility and drape are important.

Thick & Heavy Buffalo Leather

Heavier buffalo hides offer plenty of body, strength and durability while still being surprisingly easy to work with. Heavy buffalo leather is a great choice for moccasins, possibles bags, quivers, cases, belts, wallets, and other projects where a more substantial leather is needed. Some of our very thick buffalo leather can even be used for flint knapping pads, armor pieces and other projects requiring exceptional thickness and durability.

Full Grain & Suede Buffalo Leather

Full grain buffalo leather has the natural pebbling, wrinkles and variation that buffalo leather is known for, adding character and a unique look to every project.

Buffalo split leather has a soft suede finish and is a great choice for garments, bags, moccasins and other craft projects. It is also a great choice for projects where a more traditional or historical look is desired.

You can browse our Full Grain Buffalo/Bison Leather or Buffalo Suede & Split Leather sections to see the different hides currently available.

Choosing the Right Weight (Thickness)

The right hide depends on how much structure, flexibility and drape your project needs. Lighter leather works better where softness and movement matter, while heavier weights provide more body and durability.

Our Leather Weight & Thickness Guide explains how leather weight is measured and can help you choose the right weight for your project.
