Full Grain Buffalo/Bison Leather

Buffalo/Bison leather is known for its heavy pebble grain, wrinkles and natural grain variation. The texture can vary quite a bit across a single hide, which is part of what gives this leather its recognizable look.

We carry hides in a wide range of weights, generally from about 3 oz up to 10 oz, and in sizes from smaller pieces around 3 square feet to full hides approaching 30 square feet. They are chrome tanned and available in a variety of earth-tone colors.

Choosing the Right Weight for Your Project

Lighter leather, usually around 3–4 oz, can be soft and supple with good drape. These lighter weights work well for garments, pouches, medicine bags and other projects where you want the leather to remain flexible.

Medium and heavier hides have more body and are well suited for moccasins, shooting bags, archery quivers, rifle cases and similar projects. For projects requiring more substantial leather, we also carry Xtra Thick/Heavy Buffalo/Bison Hides in weights of 7 oz and heavier. Heavy leather is also commonly used for flint knapping pads.

Grain and Natural Markings

One of the things that makes these hides so recognizable is the pronounced pebble grain. The grain can change in size and texture across the hide, along with wrinkles and occasional natural marks or blemishes.

Compared with deer and elk, Buffalo/Bison is generally thicker and heavier, with less stretch and a much more pronounced grain.
